Let It Be To Me According to Your Word
This meditation is based on a passage for December 20, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: Luke 1:26-38
Reflection and Question: Mary is just about the last person on earth we would expect to receive the mission to give birth to the heir of the throne of the greatest king, David. She lives in a backwater village; she is an unmarried virgin; she is nobody. By this, Mary empowers every dismissed and disparaged nobody. And Mary steps up when the call comes to say a mighty yes, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.” Of course, LGBT church folk come to my mind as the modern disparaged nobodies, the modern Mary’s, who say “Yes!” when God calls. To what mission do you say a faithful “Yes”?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there’s a pair of us — don’t tell!
They’d banish us, you know.
How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!
